taking action

woo hoo! just one more day ’til the weekend!

who doesn’t love the weekend? after a long week of work, i need two days to breathe, relax and just do nothing.

but this weekend will be different.

for me, this weekend is all about doing something.

this weekend is about taking action.

my wife and i are hitting the road, heading to california to spend the weekend with my brothers and their significant others. but this isn’t a pleasure trip.

it’s about doing something.

it’s about action.

like most dreamers, my brothers and i have spent years envisioning, wondering, imagining, talking.

but the problem with daydreaming is it’s a passive activity. when you talk about your dreams and ideas you fool yourself into thinking you’re doing something. in truth, all you’re doing is wasting time.

no matter how much you want a dream to come true, simply willing it to happen will not make it a reality.

you cannot use jedi mind tricks to fulfill a dream.

believe me. i’ve tried.

it takes work. in other words, action.

and this weekend, my brothers and i will stop talking, stop playing jedi, and start doing. we will (finally) start a project we have long wanted to pursue. an idea we’ve been talking about for more than two years.

my heart sinks when i think about all the time we’ve spent talking about our project but doing nothing.

but the past is past. we can’t change it.

no matter how much we seem to romanticize the “if only” it’s a fool’s game and a waste of energy and time.

all we have is the time right now, why waste it bemoaning how we spent our past nows?

what i’ve learned this year is the power of taking action. particularly taking action now.

i’ve also learned that one action begets another, which begets another and before you know it you’ve got a veritable biblical lineage of action and progress.

you don’t need any particularly special skill or piece of knowledge or degree to do something amazing.

all you have to do is do it.

start.

take action. now.

if you’re wondering what the project is – and be honest, you totally are – it’s a video project. a web series idea we’ve had gestating for too long. without hyperbole, i can tell you it’s going to be awesome because everything my brothers and i do is awesome. that’s just science.

that’s all i’m going to say at the moment. suffice to say, i’ll share more as we go along. but right now, go do something toward your dream!

question: what kind of action are you avoiding right now?
